Our first meeting of 2023 got off to a lively start. Ten Little Bookworms made their way up to the Al Jimi Rooftop on a breezy Friday evening, to watch the Air Show first and then have a fun dance party-style phonics class to learn the /d/ sound.
Aarush, Yuvaan, Navisha, Rihaan, Krishiv, Rahil, Fezin, Aadhya, Nevyl and Aarvi were excited to start the meeting with a Phonics Name Game. We introduced ourselves by emphasizing the starting sounds of our names... M-M-Maitri Aunty was very happy to see that all the children did this exercise independently and enjoyed identifying the sounds that their names started with.
We then read the wonderful book "Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees. The Little Bookworms were sad to see Gerald the Giraffe being ridiculed by his friends for not being able to dance gracefully, and they all rejoiced at the end of the book after Gerald's spectacular dance show.
The children took turns to try writing the letter "D" and making the /d/ sound, while also thinking of words that start with the /d/ sound. Nevyl surprised us all by providing a unique word "dam" that nobody else had thought of.
We then learned the song "The Donut Man" to the tune of "The Muffin Man"; all the children enjoyed chanting this rhyme - Aadhya and Fezin were able to recite it back immediately and correctly. Everybody was then in the mood for donuts! So we got to work with a little craft activity - to decorate our very own paper plate donuts - we had strawberry flavoured ones, some with blueberry toppings, rainbow sprinkles and even blue stars - the children got super creative and were happy to show off their art to each other.
Finally, it was time to have a D-D-Dance party, but with a twist. We played a game of Freeze Dance, where the children were only to start dancing if the word they heard started with the /d/ sound. I had a pretty tough list of words but all the participants made it to the end of the game, by identifying the phonic sounds correctly.
I had a fun meeting with the ππLittle Bookworms π π and hope to see them again very soon!
